Healing Wing Breaks

Wing breaks are the prime reason birds are euthanised by professionals. They haven't the techniques, time, skills nor space to fully rehabilitate a bird with a broken wing, especially a compound or spiral fracture which is typical given their paper-thin skin. We handle broken wings, sometimes on a daily basis, with 3 out of 4 successful outcomes, regardless of extent of damage. Each of the cases seen below came back from catastrophic wing breaks. As long as pain is managed closely with meds 24 hours per day during healing, and the psychological needs of the species are met (toys for corvids, daily spray baths for oystercatchers, peace and quiet in low light for woodcocks, etc.) they typically heal quickly and thoroughly. At least 50% of avian care is psychological. Each species has particular needs and if they aren't addressed, their survival numbers plummet. Sadly, this subject is rarely taught or shared... worse, many aren't even aware of the importance. We are working tirelessly to change that.
